THINGS TO DO IN McGREGOR

EATING OUT - RESTAURANTS & COFFEE SHOPS

A good selection of charming Restaurants and Coffee Shops serve good country food in and around McGregor - see our dedicated Restaurant page for more detailed information.

ART, POTTERY & GALLERIES

McGregor is home to many talented artists and has several Galleries - including Edna Fourie's Edan Gallery on Voortrekker Street, and a Pottery Studio.

BIRD WATCHING

McGregor is home to a wide variety of birds and there are several hides in the area for the more serious birdwatchers. Others will be charmed by the bustling Guinea fowl, jewelled Sunbirds, African Hoopoe and brightly coloured Weaver birds - to name just a few - and I personally feel very honoured when a solitary owl returns my hoot from a nearby tree as I lie in bed at night.

ECO BUILDING - THE ULTIMATE "GREEN" LIFESTYLE

CYCLING

Bring your own for some serious cycling or hire a bicycle from the Tourism Building on Voortrekker St & find out if you can still ride a bike - they say you never lose the knack!

CONDUCTED WALKS WITH DAWID ESAU

Meeting at the Tourism Office every Saturday morning at 10am Dawid Esau conducts a tour of our quaint village - view charming cottages built of cob, straw, sand bags and more.CONTACT TOURISM 023 625 1954 FOR DETAILS

COB BUILDING

Jill Hogan, McGregor's resident cob building and permaculture specialist is a mine of information on the various forms of eco building.

ESELTJIESRUS DONKEY SANCTUARY (023 625 2593)

Don't miss a visit to the Donkey Sanctuary, situated opposite the McGregor Winery (on the right hand side just before you enter McGregor) and enjoy the tranquil surroundings and abundant birdlife whilst viewing the donkeys in their well deserved  "retirement village" - and even possibly be inspired to adopt a donkey of your very own! PLEASE PHONE FOR DETAILS & OPENING TIMES.

FISHING

Whilst McGregor can hardly be described as a fishing destination, visitor Shane Fessel from Germany spent many pleasant early morning hours fishing at the Lei Water Dam just outside the village.

And here's the proof that there are (small) fish to be caught  and lots of fun to be had, so bring your rod along!

HIKING IN & AROUND MCGREGOR

Visitors Esther & Ken Matheo Fessel from Germany pictured at the start of the Boesmanskloof / Oakes Falls Trail.                                                                          For more information on Hiking, please refer to our dedicated HIKING page.

The walk begins in Kantoor Street along the old Robertson dirt road past the brickworks on the left and just follow the signs up the trail to the right and you will be rewarded with wonderful views over the village and surrounds.

SATURDAY EVENING MARKET AT ESELTJIESRUS COUNTRY KITCHEN

This market varies between small/very small and interesting/very interesting - this is McGregor! - but the fresh  cakes & goodies and the ogranic veggies are bursting with goodness, the light meal is delicious - & a good time will be had by all! DON'T MISS IT!

DETAILS OF THE NEXT EVENING MARKET  WILL BE POSTED ON OUR "FORTHCOMING EVENTS" PAGE

SATURDAY MORNING MINI MARKET

This little market starts at 9am on a Saturday morning and can be found outside the "Old Post Office" Building opposite the NG Church in Church Street. Fresh homebaked goods, homemade jams and cheese as well as a bit of this and that can be purchased - but be quick - blink and it's gone!

SCENIC DRIVES

A drive through McGregor along the road to nowhere past the leiwater dam

A drive through McGregor along the road to nowhere past the leiwater dam and Lords' Winery to the very top of the mountain is an outing not to be missed as the views are superb and the fynbos and proteas an absolute treat when they are in flower. And carry on to the very top and you can see McGregor, Greyton, Bonnievale Montagu, Hermanus, Swellendam and Robertson............But beware! your SATNAV system might tell you that Greyton is "just over there" but whilst it is only 15kms you need to circumnavigate the mountain range as the "Road to Nowhere" is just that!
